JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team grabbed an important late-season conference win over Covenant on Saturday in dominant fashion. The Blazers, who sit second in the CCS following Saturday's showdown, knocked off the Scots behind an 85-57 scoreline.
It was a dominant performance wire-to-wire for the Blazers who jumped out to a 12-0 lead inside three minutes to start the game. Belhaven never looked back, holding a double-digit lead for 37:55 of the 40 minutes played on the night.Â
Belhaven pulled away in the first half thanks to strong shooting inside and out coupled with stifling defense. As a group, Belhaven shot 52.6% from the field in the opening half on 38 attempts paired with a 4 of 12 clip from beyond the arc.Â
Leading 48-30 at the half, the Blazers looked just as comfortable as the second half began answering Covenant's 5-0 run on the first possessions of the second half with an immediate 10-0 run to extend their lead out to 20 points.
Belhaven never let the Scots back into the game, pushing the lead further and further out as the game continued and leading by as many as 30 points in the second half. The strong lead also allowed the Blazers' coaching staff to give valuable, extended minutes to freshman and new contributors to the team.
On the day, Belhaven shot 49.3% from the field as a team, getting to the rim with regularity and converting high percentage chances. The difference was made in the rebounding and turnover battles however. The Blazers out-rebounded Covenant 50-28, one of their largest rebounding margins of the season. Belhaven also forced 20 turnovers and despite having 18 turnovers of their own, won the points off turnovers comparison 25-7 overall.
Belhaven was led by
Jordan Marshall who finished with 16 points on 7-10 shooting from the field while
Neal Terry and
Jacob Reese also finished with double-digit scoring. At the final horn, Belhaven had 13 players who had seen action in the game and all 13 had recorded at least one point. Both
Owen Davis and
Miles Gilbert also scored their first career points for the Blazers.Â
Belhaven will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Irving, Texas to take on the University of Dallas. Tip off in the Lone Star State is set for 5:00 PM.Â
