MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball Team's season came to a close on Saturday afternoon as they fell to the Maryville Scots in the CCS Championship 97-75.
Early on, the Blazers and Scots went back and forth with neither side taking full control in the opening minutes. Maryville then took a lead with a quick 8-2 run to grab an 18-11 advantage at the 13:02 mark.
Belhaven stormed back after a
Damien Wheaton jumper cut the lead to one. For the rest of the half, the Scots controlled the lead despite the best efforts from Belhaven. The Blazers would head into halftime behind 46-37.
The second half was more of the same as Maryville continued to hold on to the lead.
Jermario Hersey helped lead a valiant effort for Belhaven connecting on an and-one layup to cut the lead to seven. The Blazers continued to fight as they made several pushes at the Maryville lead as the half moved along. Belhaven would unfortunately come up short as the Scots mounted together a run that would put the game away by a final score of 97-75.
Luke Couch led the Blazers in scoring by pouring in 20 on the day with
Jacob Reese following up with another double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Jonathan Lucas and
Judah Jordan both made an impact with each chipping in 11.
Luke Couch and
Damien Wheaton were named to the CCS All-Tournament team.
The Blazers finish the season with their best record since 2013 with an 18-10 record while also finishing 8-4 in the CCS to secure second in the conference standings. Belhaven's 18 wins are the most for the program in a single-season since the 2013-14 campaign.
