GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team got off to a strong start in the Guilford Holiday Classic this weekend with a strong 65-48 win over William Peace which included a strong second half performance.
After a 10-day hiatus following their win over Berry on the 19th, Belhaven picked up where they left off with their 8th win of the season. The Blazers got off to a fast start in the first half but saw William Peace quickly gain control and hold the lead with under five minutes to go in the period.Â
Belhaven closed the half well though, going on a 5-0 run to take the lead with three minutes to play and holding a 27-22 advantage at the break. Belhaven's defense continued to stifle as it has all season, holding William Peace under 27% shooting in the first half.
The Blazers got their offense going in the second half, including seeing shots fall from three, which helped them control the final 20 minutes of play. They also once again held William Peace to low shooting figures with the Pacers shooting just 23.53% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc.Â
In the win, four different Blazers finished in double-figures with
Jacob Reese picking up another double-double. Belhaven also blocked eight shots and grabbed nine steals as their defense continues to be one of the top in the country. Belhaven ranks No. 3 nationally in blocks per game, and inside the top 10 in both opponent field goal percentage and points allowed per game.
The Blazers will have a quick turnaround as they take on hosts Guilford who have spent most of the season inside the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and are currently receiving votes in the national ranking.
