JACKSON - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team suffered a tough loss in their home opener against rival Millsaps on Tuesday by a 92-78 scoreline.
The Blazers and Majors were neck and neck through the early stages of the contest with Belhaven on top 19-17 after the opening quarter. The Blazers shot 85% from the field and went a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line in the first quarter to take the lead.
Millsaps stormed back though with a dominant 25-11 second quarter that saw Belhaven struggle offensively while the Majors went 5-6 from beyond the arc. Leading by 12 at the half, Millsaps would extend their lead to 15 heading to the fourth quarter, a period which Belhaven led 30-29, but was unable to overcome the deficit.
Ebony Gayden finished with 23 points and seven rebounds to lead the Blazers while
Shakendalah Jones and
Teanna Watts each had 11 points to finish in double-figures.
Brookelynn Saxon had a busy day finishing with five points, four assists, four rebounds and four steals.
The Blazers will look to rebound this weekend as they host the Belhaven Hoops Classic with a contest against Centenary on Friday night before hosting Emory on Saturday. Tipoff against Centenary is set for 5:00 PM.
