Box Score LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team saw their two-game winning streak halted on Thursday night, falling 66-53 to Covenant inside Barnes PE Center. The Blazers drop to 4-9 (3-2 CCS) heading into Saturday's contest against Piedmont.
Defense was the story in the early going with both teams managing just three baskets each during the opening quarter.
Ebony Gayden,
Venita Williams, and
Hayle Poindexter each recorded buckets in the frame to give Belhaven a 7-6 lead after one.
The offensive pace began to pick up in the second quarter as Gayden scored quickly to stake the Blazers to a three-point lead. Back-to-back threes from the hosts gave them the advantage as they began to settle in offensively. The Scots shot 67% from the field in the quarter to take a 27-21 lead into the break.
After Covenant stretched the lead out to 10 with 2:49 left in the third, an 8-0 run by Belhaven cut the lead to just two early in the fourth. Gayden's layup with 7:57 to play evened things at 42, but a 15-2 spurt by the Scots created a late deficit that the Blazers could not overcome.
Ebony Gayden led the Blazers in scoring with 13 points and nine rebounds, while
Xhiir Burgess recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 boards in 28 minutes of action.
Venita Williams totaled 10 points to go along with five steals on the night.
The Blazers will stay in the state of Georgia for a few days as they travel to Demorest on Saturday, January 13th to take on Piedmont. Tipoff is set for 1:00 PM.
