JACKSON, Miss. - The top-seeded Belhaven Softball team used a five-run 5th to run rule the 8th-seeded Wesleyan Wolves in Thursday's CCS First Round game held at Jim McLeod Field. The Blazers are now 25-11 and winners of 10 in a row heading into Friday's Winner Bracket matchup.
Belhaven wasted no time with the bats as
Allie Gordon hit her 33rd career home run in the bottom of the 1st to put the Blazers in front 2-0. With the homer, Gordon tied Mallory Meadows for the top spot all-time in that category.
Gordon picked up her third RBI of the game with a groundout in the 3rd that scored
Madi Miller. Meanwhile, Blazers' starter
Kennedy Carruth kept the Wesleyan hitters at bay throughout the contest.
The Blazers broke it open in the home half of the 5th with a five-run inning to end it. After becoming Belhaven's All-Time RBI leader earlier this season, Gordon rewrote the record books once again with HR No. 34 and her second of the game. On the next pitch, Carruth homered to give Belhaven a 6-0 advantage.
Anna McNeer drove in a run with an RBI groundout before a wild pitch sent
Sydney Runnels home to put the run rule into effect.
Carruth earned the win for Belhaven in the circle, allowing just one hit and punching out 10 in yet another complete game shutout.
