Baseball Takes Opener over Covenant 8-4

GOODMAN, Miss. - Nathan Herron and Dawson Albin each blasted two-run home runs to propel Belhaven to an 8-4 win over Covenant on Friday night at Charlie Donald Field. The Blazers (15-9, 7-0 CCS) have now won 12-straight and remain perfect in CCS action with a 7-0 record.

The Blazers got the bats going early as Caleb Whittle recorded the first Belhaven hit of the game with a double in the bottom of the 1st. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Whittle scored the game's first run on a sacrifice fly from Dawson Albin.

Belhaven added two more to their lead in the 3rd after Matthew Charbonnet, Whittle, and Albin each reached base with one out. Hunter Estes, the Blazers' leading hitter coming in at .351, roped a two-run single to give the Blazers a 3-0 lead.

Neither team crossed the plate until the 6th as Covenant was able to scratch a run across against Belhaven starter Harris Coleman. The Blazers responded in the bottom half as Nathan Herron sent his first homer of the season, a two-run shot, over the wall to extend the lead.

The Blazers used the long ball once again as Dawson Albin followed a Caleb Whittle leadoff double with a no-doubt home run to left in the bottom of the 7th. It was the senior shortstop's first of the 2023 season. Hunter Estes came around to score on a passed ball a couple of batters later to extend the lead to 8-1.

The Scots clawed back in the 8th with three runs on three hits and an error, but Will Swift closed the door in the 9th by retiring the Covenant hitters in order to give Belhaven the 8-4 victory.
