JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team fell to Maryville College on Wednesday in the Quarterfinal round of the Collegiate Conference of the South Tournament and saw their 2022-23 season come to a close.
The two clubs traded blows in the early part of the game but a strong start by
Ebony Gayden in particular had the Blazers up by five at the first media timeout. The remaining 4:10 of the first quarter saw points hard to come by for Belhaven but they maintained a 17-16 lead to end the frame.
After the Blazers opened the scoring in the second quarter Maryville was able to find their stride on the offensive end of the floor and some sharp shooting from behind the arc quickly put them in front.
Shantashia John's three at the buzzer pulled the scoreline back to 38-34 as halftime hit.
Out of the half Maryville quickly accelerated their lead out to double figures for the first time but Belhaven proved resilient stringing together a few short scoring runs to pull within a possession at the end of the third quarter. The final frame proved to be a frustrating one for the Blazers with the visitors outpacing the hosts 21-8 and the Blazers fell in the end by a 76-61 scoreline.
The Blazers were led on the day by
Ebony Gayden who finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds in an impressive double-double.
Shantashia John tallied 13 points while
Xhiir Burgess contributed eight points and pulled in a game-high 15 rebounds.
