JACKSON, Miss. - For the first time in school history, the Belhaven Football team is 5-0 after a huge 29-3 win over the reigning USA South champs Huntingdon on Saturday at the Belhaven Bowl Stadium. With the win, the Blazers move to a perfect 3-0 atop the USA South standings.
After both teams traded their opening possessions, Kolbe Blunt broke free for a 48-yard touchdown run to get the scoring started. The Blazers capitalized after a Huntingdon penalty moved the ball half the distance to the goal, and Devin Daniels punched in the two-point conversion from a yard and a half out to put Belhaven in front 8-0.
The second quarter opened up with a diving interception from Belhaven linebacker Landry Huddleston to give the Blazers the ball back up a score. The Blazers' offense went to work, and a 12-play, 80-yard drive concluded in a Tim Johnson keeper for six.
After quick three-and-out, Belhaven blocked the Hawk punt to give them great field position at the 35-yard line. Blunt found paydirt for the second time four plays later from 19 yards out to give Belhaven a 22-0 lead into the halftime break.
The third quarter started with a long Huntingdon drive, but the Blazers' defense stood tall to limit the Hawks to a field goal. Neither team lit up the scoreboard in the quarter as Belhaven took a comfortable 22-3 into the final frame.
With the Hawks driving to cut the lead to two possessions, Jay'Den Jones came up with a 4th-down sack to turn Huntingdon over on downs. On the next Hawks' drive, Belhaven's defense forced another huge turnover as Carlton Brown and Chavarius Garrett combined for a strip sack and recovery to give the Blazers the ball with just 5:31 to go.
Two plays later, Blunt found open grass down the sideline for a 57-yard gain, setting up a Daniels four-yard touchdown rush to put the Blazers up 29-3 with 2:56 left. To put an exclamation point on the contest, Jay'Den Jones forced and recovered a fumble on the Hawks' ensuing drive to seal the game.
It was a banner day all around for the Blazers as the offense racked up 410 rushing yards and the defense holding the Hawks to just 202 total yards. Kolbe Blunt led the way with 225 yards and two scores on the ground on 16 carries. Quarterback Tim Johnson added 93 and a touchdown on 12 carries.
Defensively, the Blazers continued to play like the top unit in the league. Carlton Brown led the way the seven tackles. Jay'Den Jones, Chantz Taylor, and Brown all recorded sacks with Landry Huddleston coming up with his second interception of the season.
The Blazers head to LaGrange, Georgia, next Saturday, October 7th to take on LaGrange College. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM.
