JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against in-state rival MUW on Tuesday as they continue the back half of their 2023 regular season campaign.
The first half was a fairly even matchup in the early going with both teams trading chances across the opening minutes. However, the momentum would shift towards the Blazers who racked up eight corners across the opening 45 minutes.
The one-sided pressure would pay off as the Blazers strung together a quick counterattack that resulted in the opening goal. A long ball up the middle of the field was headed on by
Wesley Bloodworth into space on the wing which
Matthew Farias tracked down. After a quick cut inside, Farias cut back onto his right foot and rifled a ball into the top corner from a tight angle to put the Blazers up 1-0.
Belhaven would lead at the start of the second half and the one-way traffic continued, however the Blazers were not able to find a goal to double their advantage. In the 51st minute the Blazers had their best chance as
Courtland Williams was brought down in the box for a penalty however Belhaven was unable to convert from the spot.
In the 72nd minute, MUW would find their equalizer as an Owls' attacker was brought down in the box chasing down a long ball behind the defense. MUW was able to convert their spot kick opportunity, leveling the match and the 1-1 scoreline would hold until the final whistle.
Belhaven tallied 26 shots on the night to MUW's 5 and out-performed MUW in shots on target 6-3. The Blazers also has 13 corners on the night compared to just 1 for the opposition.
Belhaven returns to action on Saturday, October 7th as they host Covenant in CCS action. Kickoff against the Scots is set for 7:30 PM at the Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
