BEREA, K.Y. – The Belhaven University Women's Basketball team was beaten on the road on Friday falling 78-52 to the Berea College Mountaineers in CCS Play. The Blazers slip to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in Conference play.
The Blazers jumped out to an advantage early 6-4 advantage at the 7:48 mark of the first quarter. Belhaven extended their lead to five points with 3:43 to go in the first quarter.
The Blazers and Mountaineers exchanged possessions and buckets for the rest of the first quarter, but Berea drilled a three pointer at the end of the first frame to lead 17-15 after one quarter.
Belhaven struggled in the second quarter as Berea extended the lead to 13 points to go into the halftime break.
The Mountaineers continued to shoot well from the floor as Berea led by 22 points going into the final quarter of play. The Blazers tried to close the gap in the fourth quarter but the Mountaineers kept their foot on the gas to take the 78-52 victory over the Blazers.
Shantashia John led the Blazers with 15 points and went 4-for-7 from the charity stripe.
Ebony Gayden scored 13 points, posted eight rebounds, and registered a block in the contest. Defensively, the Green and Gold was led by
Xhiir Burgess with nine rebounds and Haliey Poindexter with two blocks.
The Blazers will look now to their next contest on Saturday, January 7 against Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn. Tip is slated for 1:00 p.m.
