LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Belhaven volleyball team picked up a 3-1 victory over LaGrange College to open Collegiate Conference of the South play on Thursday evening. With the win, the Blazers improve to 3-8 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Green and Gold are currently on a three match winning streak.
The Blazers dominated for the majority of the match defeating the LaGrange Panthers 3-1 (25-20, 25-27, 26-24, 25-21).
In the opening set of the match, the Blazers opened the scoring with three straight points to take the early lead. The Panthers gained the lead as the score was 19-15 going into the final points of the match. The Blazers' offense caught a spark and scored 10 of the next 11 points to take the first set 25-20.
It was a battle right down to the final point in the second set, but the visitors took the set by a final score line of 27-25 to even the match up at 1-1.
The Blazers started off slow in the third set, but led the Panthers 11-9 early on. Both teams battled throughout the set as the score halted at 24-24. Belhaven took the next two points to claim the 26-24 set victory and take the 2-1 advantage in the match.
The Blazers held the 19-11 advantage in the fourth set, but LaGrange did not go down without a fight as they cut the lead to two points late in the set.Belhaven held on to 23-21 advantage late and eventually sealed the match by scoring the next two points to give Belhaven the 25-21 set victory and 3-1 win over LaGrange in the conference opener.
Offensively, the Blazers were led by
Jeslian Vazquez with 11 kills, while
Emma Gardner posted six service aces in the contest. Defensively,
Paige Broussard collected 20 digs and
Ellie Jones posted four blocks in the 3-1 win.
Belhaven will return to action on Saturday, September 24 against Maryville College and Piedmont University to continue conference play in Maryville, Tenn. First serve of the doubleheader is set for 11:00 a.m.
