Belhaven's Historic Season Comes to an End in NCAA Super Regionals

SEGUIN, Texas - The Belhaven Softball team saw their historic 2022 season come to a close after falling to #2 Texas Lutheran on Saturday in the Super Regional round of the NCAA DIII Softball Championships.

The Blazers, who made history as the first team to win a conference title since Belhaven joined the NCAA in 2019, were beaten 6-2 by the second-ranked Bulldogs on Saturday following a 2-1 extra innings defeat on Friday.

Texas Lutheran opened the scoring early with a run in the top of the 1st and added another with a run in the top of the 2nd inning. The Blazers got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Macy Ziskin led off the inning with an opposite-field double and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Abby Trahan.

The Bulldogs restored their two-run advantage in the top of the 5th following an RBI triple but the Blazers were once again quick to respond this time with Sydney Runnels crossing the plate as Abby Trahan once again came up with an RBI. Despite late efforts by the Blazers, the Bulldogs pulled away in the top of the 7th inning scoring three times on a trio of RBI singles and pushing their lead out to four runs over Belhaven. 

In the game, Kennedy Carruth finished with six strikeouts and took sole possession of the ASC single-season strikeout record ending the 2022 campaign with 230 strikeouts. 

The defeat in the best-of-three Super Regional series closes the chapter on a season for Belhaven Softball that is among the best in recent Blazers' Athletics history. The Blazers spent the majority of the 2022 season inside the top 10 of the NFCA Division III national poll and picked up 12 wins over Top 25 opponents. 

Finishing the year 41-8 overall, the Blazers also posted a 26-4 record in conference play taking home the ASC Regular Season title and following that with a win in the ASC Tournament, their first conference title since joining the NCAA. The Blazers then went unbeaten as the top seed in their NCAA Regional hosted in Marshall, Texas with wins over #6 Linfield and #7 East Texas Baptist.
