JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team is set to travel to Marshall, Texas on Thursday as they prepare for the 2022 ASC Women's Basketball Tournament. The Blazers will face off against the tournaments top seed Mary Hardin-Baylor who are also ranked #7 in the nation by d3hoops.com.
The Blazers have now qualified for the conference tournament in each of their first three seasons of eligibility for postseason play since Belhaven University's status as a member of NCAA Division III and the American Southwest Conference became official.
In the 2021-22 season the Blazers finished 10-10 overall and posted a 5-5 record at home in Rugg Arena. Belhaven wrapped up their home schedule with a non-conference victory over Mississippi University for Women 68-51 and then grabbed in important conference win with a 60-48 victory over University of the Ozarks.Â
During the regular season the Blazers were led in scoring by
Shomaria Overton who finished the year averaging 13.4 points per game while also posting a team-high 4.7 assists per game.
Xhiir Burgess finished the year averaging 12.8 points per game, the second most on the team. Burgess posted a team-high 8.3 rebounds per contest and her 1.9 blocks per game currently have her tied for the 3rd most in a single season.Â
Belhaven's matchup against UMHB is set for 2:30 PM in Marshall, Texas and the result will dictate whether they progress in the tournament.
