JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team grabbed an impressive bounce back win over Pensacola Christian College on Monday with a 91-61 rout of the Eagles prompted by a strong second half display.
The Blazers and Eagles started off the game trading blows in the early minutes. Belhaven started hot from beyond the arc sinking three of their first four long-range attempts and at the under-12 media timeout the squads were tied at 14-14.
Pensacola Christian then started to pull in front with a quick 6-0 scoring run coming out of the media timeout. The Blazers closed the gap back down and evened the contest at 23-23 with 7 minutes to go in the half.
The rest of the first half would stay close but it the Eagles were able to pull out to a 37-30 lead before a three by
Zion Owens in the final seconds pulled Belhaven within four.
Down four coming out of the half, Belhaven showed a renewed spark on both sides of the floor and retook the lead 41-40 with just over 17 minutes to go. From that point Belhaven was able to start pulling away.
The Blazers grabbed their first double-digit lead of the game thanks to a 6-0 scoring run by
Martavin McWilliams,
Judah Jordan and
Donovan Givens and never looked back. Belhaven continued to get defensive stops and transition baskets quickly turning a 10-point lead into a 20-plus point advantage. Late on, Belhaven's effort continued to create opportunities and carried the Blazers to their biggest win of the season.
As a team Belhaven posted their most efficient shooting night of the year finishing 50% from the field and 54.2% from beyond the arc. Belhaven also took care of the ball committing just 10 turnovers in the game and the Blazers won the rebounding battle 49-37 on the night.
Jordan Marshall led all scorers with 20 points on the day while
Donovan Givens finished with 12 on a 3-6 night from three.
Martavin McWilliams tallied 12 points to go with 9 rebounds and
Judah Jordan made it four Blazers in double figures as he grabbed 11 points to go with five rebounds and three assists.
Belhaven will look to keep things going in the right direction on Friday when they travel to Shreveport, Louisiana to take on Centenary College.
