Women's Hoops Dominates in Road Win over Wesleyan

Box Score MACON, Ga. – The Belhaven Women's Basketball team capped off a two-game road trip to Georgia with a second consecutive win, cruising past Wesleyan 71-41 on Saturday afternoon. The Blazers finish the 2022 portion of the season at 6-3 (2-1 CCS).

Belhaven set the tone early in Macon, jumping out to a 28-9 lead over the hosts after the first quarter. The Green and Gold were able to use that momentum in the next 10 minutes to take a 38-22 lead into the locker room.

Head coach Steve Calder's group came out of the halftime break locked in defensively, holding the Wolves to just seven third-quarter points. Belhaven led by 33 heading into the fourth before finishing off a 71-41 dominant win in conference play.

The Blazers were led by the conference's scoring leader Shantashia John, who finished with 14 points and four steals on the day. Xhiir Burgess scored 12 to join John in double figures. It was a balanced offensive attack all afternoon as 14 Blazers got into the scoring column in the win.

Despite a tough shooting day, the Blazers were elite on the defensive end. Wesleyan shot just 21.2% from the field and 18.8% from three-point range. Belhaven only committed three turnovers on the day while forcing 13 from the Wolves.

Belhaven, winners of three out of their last four, will now enjoy the Christmas break before returning to action on Tuesday, January 3rd. The Blazers will host Huntingdon College for a 2 PM tipoff at Rugg Arena.
