Dominant Third Quarter Proves Difference for Blazers in 82-72 Win

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team got an important bounce back win on Saturday as they took down Pensacola Christian College 82-72 on the road behind a strong second half.

Belhaven was able to grab the lead early in this one with their first advantage coming with just a minute played in the first quarter. From that opening minute on it felt like Belhaven maintained a solid grip on the proceedings despite the hosts briefly retaking the lead early on.

After Belhaven led 19-12 following the first quarter the offenses for both teams would pick up in the second quarter with both teams eclipsing 20 points in the frame. Belhaven took a double-digit lead for a brief time in the second half but overall the Lady Eagles were able to trim the gap by a possession as BU took a 40-35 lead into half time.

The start to the second half was a stellar one for the Blazers who took their five point lead and pushed it out to 16 points in the first three minutes of the third quarter. At the 4:09 mark of the third quarter Belhaven took a 20-point lead over PCC and from that point never looked back.

The hosts, despite the deficit, did work to close the gap on Belhaven trimming the final margin down to 10 points but the Blazers were able to comfortably see out the win that improves them to 4-2 on the early season.

Shantashia John was back to her scoring ways as she finished with a game-high 28 points and 6-11 shooting from three. John also added five assists, five rebounds and five steals in the non-conference win. Xhiir Burgess finished with a double-double posting 15 points while pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds. Ebony Gayden also finished with a double-double adding 14 points and 11 rebounds.
