JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Men's Basketball team continued their winning ways on Tuesday night, holding off the University of Dallas 66-59 in the home opener. The Blazers earned their second straight victory to improve to 2-2 on the year.
After a 5-0 start for the visiting Crusaders, Belhaven responded with a 6-0 run of their own to take the lead. The backcourt duo of
Judah Jordan and
Jordan Marshall led the Blazers on a 7-0 run to give the Green and Gold some breathing room at 19-10 midway through the first half.
The Blazers stretched their lead out to as many as 14 after
Rian Shields connected on a three-ball to put Belhaven up 26-12 with six minutes left in the half. Dallas was able to trim the Blazer lead to seven before Belhaven extended it back out to 13, taking a 40-27 lead into the break.
The teams traded buckets out of the locker room before the Blazers took control, using a 12-2 run to take a 57-36 lead with 10:42 left in the game. Dallas answered with an 18-4 run to get within single digits at 61-54.
The Crusaders continued to fight back into it, cutting the Belhaven lead to just four with 1:25 to play. The Blazers were able to seal the win with 40 seconds remaining, however, after an and-one dunk from
Neal Terry put the Belhaven in front 65-59. After a missed three on the other end,
Martavin McWilliams capped off the scoring with a free throw to give the Blazers a 66-59 win.
Jordan Marshall once again led Belhaven with 31 points and six rebounds.
Judah Jordan finished in double figures with 15 points. McWilliams was all over the floor in 31 minutes tonight, recording six points, six boards, and three assists.
Belhaven will enjoy a week off for Thanksgiving before returning to Rugg Arena on Wednesday, November 30th to battle rival Millsaps. Tip-off between the Blazers and Majors is slated for 7 PM.
