JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team picked up their second straight win to start the season on Monday as they took down Southeastern Baptist College 72-58 in non-conference action.
Belhaven's defense was the genesis of their hot start to the contest limiting the Chargers to just five points in the opening 10 minutes. Leading 20-5 after the first quarter Belhaven added to their lead before the halftime break behind a strong first half showing from Shantasia John who had 23 points in the first half.Â
Headed into halftime the Blazers led 45-21 and were able to spread the on-court inutes around in the second half. The Chargers battled back in the third quarter working to trim the deficit but Belhaven was able to keep distance between themselves and the visitors.
In the fourth and final quarter, the Chargers edged Belhaven by just a one-point margin but in the end, the 20-plus point advantage for Belhaven early on was enough to get the second win of the season.Â
In the game the Blazers shot an impressive 35% from three on 20 attempts while keeping SBC from scoring from beyond the arc. The Blazers outrebounded the Chargers 39-35 and the Belhaven bench outscored the opposition 27-10.
Belhaven was led by Shantasia John for a second straight game as she finished with 27 points on 9-11 shooting in just 18 minutes of play. Xhiir Burgess also finished in double figures with 12 points while shooting 6-9 from the field. In total, 18 different Blazers saw time on the floor as Belhaven continues non-conference action.
