Volleyball Takes Down MUW 3-1

JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Volleyball team opened up a busy weekend of action with a 3-1 victory over in-state foe MUW. After dropping the first set, the Blazers went on to win three straight to take the match.

The Owls jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the opening set. Both teams went back and forth from that point on until MUW took control thanks to a 4-0 run go up 21-14. Belhaven battled back, but MUW held on to win 25-19.

Once again the second set was highly contested as it was tied at 8 in the early going. The Owls scored the next four points, but the Blazers responded with three straight to cut the lead to 12-11. The teams traded points for the remainder of the set, but it was Belhaven scoring the final two to win the pivotal second set, 25-23.

Belhaven used the momentum to take an early 6-3 lead in the third set. A 4-0 run midway through gave the Blazers a 13-7 advantage. The Green and Gold went on to score the set's last six points to cruise to a 25-12 win.

With the Blazers looking to close it out in the fourth set, they grabbed an early 7-3 lead. After MUW battled back to get within one score, Belhaven scored five out of the next six points to take control at 16-11.

The Owls got back into it late in hopes of a decisive fifth set, cutting the Belhaven lead to one at 19-18. However, the Blazers finished strong as Emma Gardner's kill secured a 25-20 set win and a 3-1 match victory.

Ellie Jones and Jeslian Vazquez finished with double-digit kills with 13 and 10 respectively. Olivia Johnson recorded 30 assists to lead the Blazers in that category.

Belhaven will return to Rugg Arena tomorrow, October 15th, for the final time in 2022, as the Blazers welcome Maryville and Piedmont for a CCS tri-match. Belhaven is set to play the Scots at noon and the Lions at 4 PM.
