Blazers Take Down Agnes Scott in Saturday Split

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Volleyball team split their doubleheader action on Saturday as they hosted Berea College and Agnes Scott College in conference action. Belhaven fell in straight sets to the Mountaineers from Berea before bouncing back with a straight set win of their own over Agnes Scott to close out the day.

BLAZERS VS BEREA

In the first match of the day, the Blazers fell behind early as Berea jumped out to an early advantage in the first set. Belhaven aimed to close the gap and got it down to a four-point Berea lead in the first set but the Blazers unable to take it beyond that point.

The second set was a more closely contested set with Belhaven staying within a point of the Mountaineers to the mid-point of the set until Berea pulled away. The visitors then closed out the match with a strong third set in which Belhaven made a late run but came up short. 

Jeslian Vazquez led the Blazers in the first match of the day with six kills on 19 total attacks while Ellie Jones posted five kills on the same number of attacks. Miriam Ateca provided 13 assists and 10 digs in the match as well. 

BLAZERS VS AGNES SCOTT

Despite the defeat in the first match of the day, Belhaven bounced back in a big way sealing their first Collegiate Conference of the South victory inside Rugg Arena with a straight sets win over Agnes Scott. 

In the match, Belhaven struggled early on and fell behind in the first set with Agnes Scott taking the first four points. After falling behind 7-1, the Blazers found their stride taking 11 of the next 14 points and a 12-10 lead at the midpoint of the set. Belhaven carried the run to a 25-13 set win over the Scotties and then continued with a more end to end set victory in the second set which they led in its entirety.

The Blazers sealed the win, their fifth of the season, with a strong third set that they once again led from start to finish which pushed Belhaven's conference record to 3-3 on the year. 

For a second straight match, Jeslian Vazquez led the Blazers in kills tallying nine against Agnes Scott while Cailtin Torok, Emma Gardner and Rylee White all picked up four kills each. Olivia Johnson led the Blazers wtih 15 assists in the win while Emma Gardner topped the team with 14 digs. 

The Blazers will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Poplarville, Mississippi to face Pearl River CC.
