JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Blazers (3 - 3 - 1) men's soccer secure their first ASC win of the season as they caged the McMurry University War Hawks (2 - 6) by a final score of 1-0.
Conference matches are the toughest games of the season. With the mid-afternoon, blazing sun beaming down on the field, it sets the proper battlefield to grind out a win in the Bowl. The Blazers were able to do that today thanks to another Dalton Morgan and Brady Jacobs combination.
Just five minutes into the match, Dalton Morgan hit a rocket into the side netting of the goal from yet another silky Brady Jacobs assist.
"I am very pleased to get back on the scoresheet, not just for me but for the team as well," Morgan states, "We were able to pick up a good result in tough circumstances."
Just after the opening goal, the Blazers had another chance denied by the post, which was hit by Ian Requilman. Heading into Halftime, the Blazers seized all of the momentum as they looked motivated to pick up the result.
The Blazers would continue to show fight in the second half. Brady Jacobs had a shot cleared off the line midway through the second period. McMurry would not back down. However, the opening goal would prove to be enough for the Blazers in the afternoon.
The Blazers put in a good shift at the back as they picked up their first clean sheet of the season, led by Goalkeeper Max Rudolph and Captain John Avery Slay.
"I am happy with the team today as we responded with a good all-around performance today, "Slay expresses, "We recorded our first clean sheet and first conference win of the season, we must take on step at a time in conference play.
While not on the scoresheet, Striker Enzo Guercio was integral for the Blazers going forward with his link-up and hold-up play.
"It doesn't matter if I score or not as long as we pick up the win as a team," Enzo states, "I know the goals will come so I will just keep doing what I can to help the team."
The Blazers improve to (1 - 1) in conference play. Dalton Morgan picked up his fifth goal of the season assisted by Brady Jacobs fifth assist of the season. Max Rudolph recorded 3 saves as he kept his first clean sheet of the season.
The Blazers will return to action on the road on Thursday, September 30th at 7:30pm against Sul Ross State University.
