PINEVILLE, La - The Belhaven University Softball team began their regular season final series with a game one win, 5-1, on the road against the Louisiana College Wildcats.
The Blazers started their scoring off early as they plated a solo run in the first inning with
Marlee Blackwell starting the game by being hit by the pitcher and later scoring on a single by
Kennedy Carruth giving the Blazers a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats lone run came in the bottom of the first knotting up the game at 1-1.
The tie would be short lived as
Macy Brabham led off the second inning with a solo home run to center field, her first of the season, to give the Blazers a 2-1 lead. The Blazers then added their final three runs in the same inning as
Abby Trahan singled to follow Brabham. Trahan then advanced to third as
Marlee Blackwell reached on an error.
Elizabeth Taggard then hit a single scoring Trahan, while Blackwell scored on a single by
Allie Gordon. Taggard later scored on a single by
Anna McNeer giving the Blazers a 5-1 lead.
The Wildcats only had two baserunners advance past second base over the last three innings, while a three-up-and-three-down bottom of the seventh sealed the Blazers 5-1 victory.
Kennedy Carruth drew the start in the circle for the Blazers and improved to 19-2 overall with the win. Carruth allowed one unearned run in the complete game effort on four hits with eight strikeouts. The Blazers offense totaled ten hits as
Allie Gordon,
Anna McNeer, and
Abby Trahan led the way with two hits each, while
Elizabeth Taggard,
Kennedy Carruth,
Cade Bass, and
Macy Brabham had one hit apiece. Taggard, Gordon, Carruth, McNeer, and Brabham all had one RBI each during the contest.
The Blazers and Wildcats will finish their series with a doublheader on Saturday, May 1. The action is set to start at 12 p.m.
