JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University Softball team wrapped up the home portion of the 2021 regular season with a 3-0 win over the LeTourneau YellowJackets to claim a series win over the American Southwest Conference opponent on Monday, April 19.
There was no score for either team through top half of the third inning; however,
Marlee Blackwell changed that as she took one swing of the bat and cranked her fourth home run of the season over the left field fence giving the Blazers a 1-0 lead. The Blazers added a solo run in the fourth inning as
Cade Bass drew a lead-off walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Anna McNeer, and then later scored on a double by
Alayna Adams increasing the Blazers lead to 2-0.
The final run for the Blazers came in the fifth inning as
Elizabeth Taggard and
Allie Gordon started the inning with back-to-back singles.
Macy Brabham was brought in as a pinch runner for Taggard and then later scored on a groundout by
Cade Bass giving the Blazers a 3-0 lead. The YellowJackets had two baserunners in the sixth inning, but the threat was ended with a strikeout, while a three-up-and-three-down seventh secured the 3-0 win and the series for the Blazers.
Kennedy Carruth got the start for the Blazers and improved to 16-2 overall on the season. In the complete game shutout, Carruth allowed three hits with one walk and had 13 strikeouts. The Blazers totaled eight hits as
Elizabeth Taggard and Alyana Adams collected two hits apiece, while
Marlee Blackwell,
Allie Gordon,
Haley Hanson, and
Abby Trahan had one hit each. Blackwell, Adams, and
Cade Bass had one RBI each.
The Blazers improve to 25-7 overall and 17-4 in ASC play and will return to action on the road to face off against the East Texas Baptist University Tigers. The Blazers and Tigers will start their series with a doubleheader on Friday, April 23, starting at 5 p.m.
