RICHARDSON, Texas - The Belhaven University Softball team finished off a road series sweep against the University of Texas at Dallas on Saturday, April 10. The Blazers took game three over the Comets by a final of 10-2.
The Blazers jumped ahead of the Comets with a pair of runs in the first inning.
Marlee Blackwell hit a lead-off single and then
Elizabeth Taggard took one swing of the bat and smashed her sixth home run of the season scoring Blackwell. The Blazers added three runs in the second inning as
Anna McNeer started the inning by reaching on a fielding error. McNeer later scored as
Alayna Adams reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on the play. Adams then advanced to third on a single by
Abby Trahan, who then stole second. Adams and Trahan later scored on a single by
Elizabeth Taggard giving the Blazers a 5-0 lead.
The Blazers added a pair of runs in the third inning as
Cade Bass and
Anna McNeer hit back-to-back singles to start the inning, while back-to-back singles by
Haley Hanson and
Alayna Adams scored Bass and McNeer respectively increasing the Blazers lead to 7-0.Â
The Comets added solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the lead down to 7-2; however, the Blazers responded with three runs in the sixth inning.
Abby Trahan started the inning reaching base on an error and then was forced out as
Marlee Blackwell reached on a fielder's choice. Blackwell later scored on a double by
Kennedy Carruth, who then scored on a throwing error.
Allie Gordon followed with a double and then scored as
Cade Bass reached on a fielding error giving the Blazers a 10-2 lead. A three-up-and-three-down bottom of the sixth secured the 10-2 game three win and series sweep for the Blazers.
Kennedy Carruth got the start for the Blazers and improved to 14-2 overall with the win. Carruth pitched five and one-third innings allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.
Jovi Jones pitched two-thirds of scoreless relief retiring both batters that she faced. The Blazers tallied 14 hits during the contest as
Allie Gordon led the way with three hits, while
Elizabeth Taggard,
Anna McNeer, and
Haley Hanson had two hits apiece.
Marlee Blackwell,
Kennedy Carruth,
Cade Bass,
Alayna Adams, and
Abby Trahan had one hit each. Taggard led the team with four RBI while Carruth, Hanson, and Adams had one RBI each.
The Blazers improve to 23-6 overall and 15-3 in ASC play and will return to action with a midweek doubleheader against the Mississippi University for Women on Wednesday, April 14. The Blazers and Owls will kick off the action at 1 p.m., at Jim McLeod Field.
