JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University volleyball team swept the Mississippi University for Women Owls in a doubleheader in the final home matches of the season. The Blazers defeated the Owls by a final score of 3-0 in both matches. With the win, the Blazers improve to 5-11 overall.
In match one, the Blazers and Owls exchanges points for the majority of the set until the score halted at 24-24. The MUW Owls score the next point in the set to gain the advantage, but the Blazers fought back to grab the opening set by a final of 27-25. The Owls jumped out to a 12-8 lead midway through the second set, but the Blazers grabbed 10 of the next 12 points to give the Green and Gold the 18-14 advantage. The Blazers would go on to capture the second set by a final score of 25-21 and take the 2-0 lead in the match. The Blazers never trailed in the third set as they picked up the 25-13 third set victory to give the Blazers the 3-0 match victory.
Chelsea Creighton led the Blazers with eight kills, while Vivian Marquez posted seven kills in the contest.
Emily Carroll registered six blocks in the contest and earned four kills. Defensively, Senior
Sydney McEachern finished the match with 19 digs. As a team, the Blazers tallied 33 kills in the sweep against MUW.
In match two, the Green and Gold took a commanding 15-8 lead to open the first set. The Blazers would stretch their lead to 24-14 late in the set and would go on to take the first set by a score of 25-15. MUW kept it close midway through the second set as the Blazers led the Owls 16-13. The Blazers would rip off nine straight points to close out the second set and capture the 25-13 set victory. The dominating play by the Green and Gold continued in the third set as they cruised out to a 21-13 lead over the Owls. The Blazers earned four of the next five points to give the Green and Gold the 25-13 set victory and the 3-0 victory over MUW.Â
Vivian Marquez led the Blazers in match two with 10 kills, while
Chelsea Creighton added seven kills of her own.
Grace Eidson had 22 assists in the contest and registered three service aces.Defensively, Senior
Sydney McEachern finished the match with 22 digs.Â
The Blazers will return to the court on Tuesday, April 6 against the Mississippi University for Women Owls in Columbus, Miss. First serve of the doubleheader is slate for 5:00 p.m.
