JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Soccer team earned an ASC Tournament berth for the second straight season after earning a draw at home against unbeaten UT-Dallas on Friday night.
The Blazers, who entered the game needing a win or draw to guarantee their spot in the postseason tournament, fell behind early against the Comets. The visitors struck first in the match with Oliver Hamby capitalizing on a miscue by the Belhaven backline. A through ball beat the Blazers' defenders and put Hamby through on goal and the attacker finished his opportunity with a right-footed strike across the goal to make it 1-0 UTD just before half time.
In the second half the Blazers pushed for an equalizer increasing their press and tempo in attack. Belhaven finally got the breakthrough in the 79th minute when a long throw in by
Aleksander Harris deep in the Comets' half was redirected in the box and fell to
Brady Jacobs who smashed home his third goal of the season and drew the match level.Â
Belhaven searched for a winner late in regulation with the best chance coming on a free kick right on the edge of the penalty area with under 10 minutes to go. After 90 minutes, the game went to extra time and Belhaven was able to protect their draw ensuring their second appearance in the ASC Tournament in as many eligible seasons.Â
The Blazers' seed in for the first round of the tournament is still to be decided as is Belhaven's first round opponent. Belhaven is guaranteed either the #3 or #4 seed from the East Division with the official spot dependent upon the ETBU-Louisiana College result in Pineville on Saturday night.
The first round of the ASC Tournament is set to take place on Thursday, April 1st.
