BROWNWOOD, Texas - The Belhaven baseball team polished off a three-game sweep of the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets on Saturday and picked up their eighth straight conference victory.
After two wins in the doubleheader against Howard Payne on Friday, Belhaven jumped out to an early lead in the final game of the series, striking for a pair of runs in the top of the 1st inning. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Howard Payne would bounce back with a single run to cut the Blazers' lead to one and eventually tied the game in the home half of the 5th inning.
The Blazers jumped back out in front in the 8th inning scoring a trio of runs in the frame.
Hunter White got the scoring going when his RBI double drove in
Coby Stevens.
Kyle McLaughlin followed that up with an RBI single, scoring White from second base.
Trip Benson picked up what eventually would mark the game-winning RBI with a double to left field that scored
Nick Lucido.
In the bottom of the ninth, Howard Payne threatened with a leadoff triple and manufactured a pair of runs but
Logan Goodreau was able to shut the door with a strikeout looking to secure the Belhaven win.
Beau Louviere got the start for the Blazers on Saturday and threw five innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits. The Blazers' starter struck out five, tying his season high.
Logan Goodreau picked up the win out of the bullpen, throwing 3.1 innings and allowed a pair of earned runs on just four hits.
Shortstop
Nick Lucido led the way at the plate for the Blazers with a 3-4 day, a stolen base and a pair of runs scored.
Kyle McLaughlin finished 2-4 at the plate and picked up an RBI.
With the win the Blazers move to 13-5 on the season and 8-1 in ASC play. Now sitting second in the American Southwest Conference, the Blazers return to action on March 26th when they host Sul Ross State in a three-game series. First pitch of the first game is set for 4 PM.
