JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University Softball team played host to the Jackson State University Lady Tigers in a midweek series finale on Wednesday, March 10, and the Blazers earned a series sweep with a 9-8 walk-off victory over the Lady Tigers.
The Blazers fell behind early in the game as the Lady Tigers plated six runs in the top of the second inning, while the Blazers cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Macy Brabham got the Blazers offense going with a single and then later scored on a double by Trahan, while Trahan then scored on a single by
Marlee Blackwell making the score 6-2 in favor of the Lady Tigers.
There was no change in the score until the bottom of the fifth when the Blazers plated six runs to take their first lead of the game as
Abby Trahan started the inning by getting hit by the pitcher followed by
Marlee Blackwell reaching safely on a fielder's choice as Trahan was safe on the play because of an error, and then
Elizabeth Taggard singled to score Trahan. Kennedy Carrtuh later hit a single to load the bases for the Blazers, while Blackwell scored as
Cade Bass drew a walk and then Carruth and Bass scored as
Marissa Rice reached safely on a fielder's choice.
May Hebert was brought in to pinch hit and drew a walk to load the bases after
Macy Brabham re-entered the game after Rice reached base during her pinch hit appearance, while Bass and Brabham then scored as Trahan reached on an error giving the Blazers an 8-6 lead.
The Lady Tigers plated two runs in the top of the sixth knotting up the game at 8 apiece. The Blazers seventh inning started
Anna McNeer being hit by the pitcher and then stealing second base to get into scoring position. McNeer then advanced to third on a sacirfice bunt by
Macy Brabham, while
May Hebert was hit by the pitcher and
Abby Trahan drew a walk to load the bases.
Marlee Blackwell then stepped up to the plate and delivered the game-winning hit with a single through the left side of the infield, scoring McNeer, and giving the Blazers the 9-8 win and sweep of the Lady Tigers.
Dallas Blaker got the start for the Blazers and pitched one and one-third innings allowing six runs, four earned, on five hits with one walk, one strkeout, and one hit-by-pitch.
Kennedy Carruth pitched five and two-thirds innings of relief and picked up the win, improving to 6-1 overall. Carruth allowed two runs on two hits with two walks, four hit-by-pitch, and tied her season high in strikeouts with 12.
The Blazers improve to 12-3 overall and will return to action as they will host a doubleheader against the #8 Berry College Vikings. The Top 25 matchup is set for start times of 12 p.m., and 2 p.m., on Saturday, March 13.
