Box Score JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Football team returned to the field for the first time in over 400 days when they played host to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday. The Blazers fell to the visiting Cru by a final score of 41-0 in their 2021 season opener.
The Cru were able to score early in the game after Tommy Bowden broke off a long touchdown run, the first of his two rushing scores on the day. A fumble recovery in the endzone increased their first quarter lead.
In the second quarter, the Cru were able to capitalize on strong field position to jumpstart their offense and added to their lead to take a 27-0 advantage in the half.
Coming out of the break, the Blazers were able to slow down the UMHB attack with more consistency but some untimely turnovers and unfortunate penalties allowed the visitors to increase their lead.
Bowden led the way for the Cru finishing the game with 86 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground as well as 104 yards passing on 11 completions with two more touchdowns. Kyle King completed a touchdown pass for UMHB late in the game.
Brad Foley was the focal point of Belhaven's offense carrying the ball 12 times for 45 yards. The Blazers had three quarterbacks see time under center with
Ben Owens,
Tim Johnson and
Ras Pace all getting snaps.
The Blazers defense was able to force multiple turnovers including an interception late in the game by freshman Elijah Williams.
Belhaven will return to action on Saturday, February 13 against ETBU. Kick off in Marshall, Texas is set for 1 PM.
