JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team picked up a home win on Friday night, holding on to defeat the McMurry Warhawks by a final score of 70-67.
Belhaven got off to a quick start, opening up a 13-6 lead on the visitors after beating the full court pressure deployed by McMurry at the beginning of the game. The Warhawks switched to a half court defense and were able to slow down the Blazers' offense helping them capture a 17-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Blazers battled back in the second thanks in large part to improved three point shooting and took a 37-32 lead into the half after a half-court buzzer beating three by
Kourtne Lee.
Coming out of the break, Belhaven extended their lead and got up by as many as 11 points midway through the third quarter. In the final quarter, Belhaven looked primed to run away with the game leading by 14 with 7:30 to go. McMurry increased their defensive pressure though and were able to close the lead to two points but the comeback bid fell short on a missed three point shot at the buzzer.
The Blazers were led by
Destiny Johnson who finsihed the game with a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds in 28 minutes of play.
Shanda Pugh led Belhaven in scoring with 14 points on 6-8 shooting from the field and tacked on five points to her performance.
With the win, Belhaven improves to 4-7 on the season and 2-5 in conference play. McMurry drops to 0-12 and 0-8 against ASC opponents this year.
Belhaven returns to action Monday, February 8 at Louisiana College. Tip off is set for 5:30 PM.
