JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University Men's Basketball team played host to the Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys on Thursday, February 4, and the Cowboys came away with a 76-62 victory on the hardwood.
The game started with a flurry of back and forth scoring from both teams over the opening minutes as the Cowboys took a 14-10 lead with 15:11 left in the first period. The Blazers responded with a 15-6 scoring run to take a 25-20 lead with 7:39 remaining in the first period, while the Cowboys closed out the first period with a 15-8 scoring run to take a 35-33 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
The second period saw the Cowboys expand their lead to 46-38 with 15:04 remaining. The Blazers continued to battle throughout the second period, but the Cowboys maintained and grew their lead to 56-47 with just over nine minutes left in the period. The Cowboys ended the game with a 20-13 scoring run to seal the 76-62 victory over the Blazers.
Offensively the Blazers were led by sophomore guard
Luke Couch with 18 points, while sophomore guard
Matthew McMillan added on 14 points. Junior forward
Terence Anderson, Jr., had eight points, and junior guard
Rance Champ tacked on seven points for the night.
The Blazers fall to 3-6 overall and 2-5 in American Southwest Conference play, and will return to action as they host the McMurry University War Hawks on Friday, February 5. The action is set to tip-off at 8:30 p.m., in Rugg Arena.
