Blazers Earn Senior Day Victory over Owls

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University Men's Basketball team hosted the Mississippi University for Women Owls and had Senior Day activities on Saturday, February 27. The Blazers led wire-to-wire in the game as they earned a 90-78 victory on the hardwood.

The game started with both teams trading two-point baskets, which resulted in the only tie of the game as the Blazers scored on their second possession of the game, to take a 4-2 lead, and never looked back. The Blazers proceeded to go on an 18-8 scoring run to take a 22-10 lead with 11:39 remaining in the first period. The Owls fought back and responded with a 10-2 scoring run to cut the Blazers lead to 24-20 with just under six minutes left in the first period. However, the Blazers responded by closing out the period with an 18-12 scoring run to take a 42-32 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

The Blazers opened the second period with a 13-10 scoring run to increase their lead to 55-42 with 14:31 remaining in the game. Both teams added 11 points to their totals as the Blazers led the game, 66-53, with just under 10 minutes remaining. The Blazer then closed out the game with a 24-18 scoring run to seal the 90-71 victory for Senior Day.

Luke Couch was the leading scorer for the Blazers with 36 points and shared the team lead in rebounds with eight. Brandon Phillips was the lone senior honored before the game and had a career day as his 16 points and eight rebounds were his best numbers in both categories in his time as a member of the Blazers. Joseph Jones added 14 points on the night for the Blazers. As a team, the Blazers shot 47.3 percent from the floor (26-of-55) including 25.9 percent (7-of-27) from three, and were 31-of-38 for 81.6 percent from the free throw line.

The Blazers improve to 4-11 overall and will return to action as they host the East Texas Baptist University Tigers in American Southwest Conference play on Thursday, March 4. The action is set to tip-off at 7 p.m.
