JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team picked up a second straight ASC win on Saturday knocking off the Sul Ross State Lobos by a 68-56 scoreline.
The Blazers jumped out to an early lead against the Lobos with a hot shooting start from behind the three-point line going 4/5 from deep in the opening four minutes and forcing Sul Ross into an early timeout. Despite an early double-digit lead, the Lobos were able to trim the Blazers lead back down and tied the game on multiple occasions in the second part of the first half. Despite the rally, Belhaven was able to take a 31-30 lead into halftime.Â
In the second half,
Donovan Givens provided a spark for the Blazers scoring 13 points in the first 12 minutes of the half to keep the Blazers in front. Strong defense and a late scoring burst from
Luke Couch including made 3PT on back to back possessions was enough to keep the Lobos at bay as the Blazers closed out the contest.
Belhaven was led by
Luke Couch in scoring who finished with 21 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists.
Donovan Givens picked up a Blazers' career-high 19 points while going 8-14 from the field and
Matthew McMillan added 12 points on 4-6 shooting from three.
As a team the Blazers shot just over 47% from the field in the game and 38.5% from beyond the arc. Belhaven was able to hold Sul Ross to just 32.8% shooting from the field and under 15% shooting from three on their way to the victory.Â
Belhaven improves to 5-4 on the season and 3-3 in conference play. They'll return to ASC play on January 3rd, 2022 as they travel to Marshall, Texas to face ETBU.Â
