JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven softball team played host to cross-town rival MIllsaps in their home opener of the 2020 season with the Blazers coming away with an 8-0 victory over the Majors for their fifth straight win of the season.

The Blazers got an early lead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning as senior outfielder Marlee Blackwell led off with a single, then scored as junior first baseman Elizabeth Taggard hit the Blazers first homerun of the season for an early 2-0 lead. Sophomore third baseman Allie Gordon then drew a walk and advanced to second on a single by sophomore outfielder Haley Hanson. Gordon later scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman outfielder Madison Miller, while Hanson scored on a single by senior pitcher Bailey Root making the score 4-0.

The Blazers added a solo run in the third as Hanson reached on an error, advanced to second on a single by junior outfielder Abby Trahan, and later scored as Root reached on a fielding error. The Blazers tacked on two more runs in the fourth as freshman second baseman May Hebert led off with a walk. Hebert later scored as Blackwell hit her second single of the game. Taggard later drew a walk, advanced to second on a single by Gordon, and then scored on Hanson's second single of the game making the score 7-0.

The final run of the game came in the sixth inning came as Gordon hit her second single of the game, took second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a single by junior pitcher Dallas Blaker sealing the 8-0 victory for the Blazers.

Bailey Root got the start and earned her third win of the season for the Blazers. Root pitched five innings allowing two hits, walking one, and striking our three while did not allow a baserunner for the Majors until her fourth inning of work on her only walk of the game. Dallas Blaker pitched one inning of relief and faced just three batters in the inning retiring all in order.

The Blazers improve to 5-1 overall and will return to action this week as they host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in ASC action this weekend. The Blazers and Cru will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 1 p.m., and a single game on Saturday at 12 p.m.
