LONGVIEW, Texas - The Belhaven University Blazers Men's Basketball team wrapped up their 2019-20 season with a road contest against the LeTorneau YellowJackets on Saturday, February 22, with the YellowJackets earning a 114-98 victory over the Blazers on the hardwood.
Both the Blazers and YellowJackets had a strong showing in the opening minutes of the first half with the YellowJackets taking an 18-14 lead with 15 minutes remaining. The YellowJackets increased their lead to double digits, 30-20 with ten minutes left in the half; however, the Blazers fought back and tied the game at 41 apiece with just over four minutes remaining. The YellowJackets closed out the first half with a 10-4 scoring run to take a 51-45 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
The YellowJackets started the second half with a strong surge to push their lead to 66-48 with just under 15 minutes remaining. The Blazers fought throughout the remainder of the game, but could not overcome the YellowJackets lead as they matched the Blazers basket-for-basket to maintain their lead and seal the 114-98 victory.
Senior guard
Brosnan Cooks led the Blazers with a double-double of 32 points and 19 rebounds paired eight assists, while freshman guard
Matthew McMillan tied a career-high with 20 points along with three rebounds. Junior guard Joshua Roberts had 12 points with four rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while senior guard
Justin Jones had ten points with two rebounds and one steal. Freshman guard
Luke Couch and graduate guard
Ryan Dupree had six points each, senior guard
Rick Hodum had five points, while sophomore guards
Haze Brown and
Raymond Rios, Jr., had four points and three points respectively to round out the scoring for the Blazers.
As a team, the Blazers shot 37-for-80 for a percentage of 46.3 from the field including 14-for-37 for a percentage of 37.8 from the three point area, and were 10-for-16 for a percentage of 62.5 from the charity stripe. The Blazers scored 46 points in the paint, had 17 points off turnovers, 16 second-chance points, 19 fast-break points, and had 38 points from their bench.
The Blazers finish the season with a 10-15 overall record and 7-9 in American Southwest Conference play.
