Blazers Split Season Opening Doubleheader

MACON, Ga. - The Belhaven Softball team split their season opening doubleheader on the road against the Wesleyan College Wolves on Saturday, February 15.

Game One
In the first game of the day, the Blazers fell to the Wolves 4-1. The Wolves jumped out to an early lead as they scored all four runs in the first four innings. The lone run for the Blazers came in the sixth inning as freshman Madison Miller scored on a fielder's choice by sophomore Allie Gordon.

Senior Kassie Shipley got the start for the Blazers and took the loss pitching 1 2/3 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit with three walks and one strikeout, while junior Hannah Finley pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief allowing two runs, both earned, on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Game Two
The Blazers bounced back in game two with a 9-0 victory in six innings taking advantage of four errors throughout the contest. The Blazers broke the scoreless tie in the third innning as junior Abby Mondy reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and then scored on a single by junior Elizabeth Taggard. Taggard then adavanced to second on a single by Miller, while both later scored in the inning on a two-RBI double by Gordon giving the Blazers a 3-0 lead.

The Blazers added four more runs in the fifth as Mondy singled and stole second, followed by a hit-by-pitch to Taggard. Mondy and Taggard then pulled off the double steal, and Mondy came around to score as Miller singled for the second time in the game. Taggard later scored in the inning on a single by sophomore Haley Hanson, while Miller and Gordon, who drew a walk earlier in the inning, came around to score increasing the Blazers lead to 7-0. Mondy and junior Abby Trahan added the final two runs in the six inning.

Senior Bailey Root and junior Dallas Blaker combined for a no-hitter in the game as Root started and threw five innings walking two with four strikeouts, while Blaker pitched the final inning in a relief appearance. 

Taggard, Miller, Gordon, and Hanson all recorded RBIs in the doubleheader, while Miller went 3-5 over the series with three singles, three runs scored, and one RBI in her debut for the Blazers.

The Blazers are now 1-1 overall and will return to action on the road against the Concordia University Tornados in their opener of American Southwest Conference play.
