Blazers Victorious Over Ozarks on Senior Day

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Univeristy Men's Blazers Basketball team wrapped up their regular season home schedule hosting the University of the Ozarks Eagles for Senior Day on Saturday, February 15, with the Blazers coming away with 93-90 overtime victory on the hardwood.

Before the game, six Blazers seniors were honored for their contributions to Blazers basketball, those being guards Rick Hodum, Ryan Dupree, Kelvin Pruitt, Trai James, Justin Jones, and Brosnan Cooks.

The game began with the Blazers and Eagles trading buckets and leads with the Eagles ultimately taking a 29-21 lead with just over nine minutes left in the first half. The Blazers continued to battle with the Eagles throughout the half; however, the Eagles held on to their lead, 46-42, heading into the locker rooms at halftime. The Blazers came out in the second half and cut the lead to 54-53 with just under 16 minutes left in the game. Both teams traded baskets and leads for the majority of the second half with the Blazers ultimately taking a 79-75 lead with two and a half minutes remaining in the game. The Blazers found themselves trailing late in the game, but freshman guard Luke Couch successfully converted a game-tying free throw with six seconds left and ultimately sending the game into overtime at 80 apiece.

In the overtime period, the Blazers outscored the Eagles 13-10 with Cooks leading the way with six points in the period. Jones had four points, Couch had two, and James sealed the victory with a successful free throw with 14 seconds remaining.

Couch led the way for the Blazers with a career-high 36 points, while Cooks had a double-double of points and rebounds. James and Jones both posted double digit scoring games in the winning effort for their final home regular season game.

The Blazers improve to 10-13 overall and 7-7 in American Southwest Conference play. The Blazers now sit in fourth place in the ASC East Division standings and return to action on the road against the East Texas Baptist University Tigers on Thursday, February 20. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
