BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Belhaven Men's Basketball team opened their 2020-21 season with a road contest against Birmingham-Southern College. The Panthers came away with a 95-78 victory over the Blazers.
The Blazers had a strong showing to start the game as they took a 10-6 lead over the Panthers with 16:39 left in the first half. The Panthers responded with a 20-12 scoring run to take a 26-22 lead with 7:18 remaining in the first half, and finished the half with a 25-16 run to take a 51-38 lead into the locker rooms at halftime. The Blazers showed a valiant effort throughout the second half, but could not cut overcome the Panthers lead as the Panthers matched the Blazers bucket for bucket throughout much of the half sealing the 95-78 victory.
The Blazers had four players with double-digit scoring nights led by junior guard
Rance Champ who had 20 points along with four rebounds and one steal. Junior forward
Korri Edwards tacked on 14 points with one rebound and once block, while sophomore guard
Luke Couch added 12 points with a team leading seven rebounds and three steals. Sophomore guard
Rian Shields had ten points and two steals, while sophomore guard
Matthew McMillan had nine points and shared the team-high in steals with Couch having three during the game.
