JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven Women's Basketball team dropped their ASC home opener on Thursday, falling to #15 Mary Hardin-Baylor, 76-54 at Rugg Arena.
The Blazers struggled to find their shot most of the game and started out cold going just 2-20 from the field in the first quarter. Their defense was quick enough to force eight turnovers though limiting the Cru to just a 14-9 lead after the first period. The offensive struggles continued in the second quarter and Mary Hardin-Baylor was able to stretch their lead out to 40-26 at the half.
A quick 6-0 UMHB run put the Cru up by double digits and the Blazers would have to fight from behind the rest of the way. The Cru were able to widen their lead late and push the game to a 76-54 final.
As a team the Blazers shot 24% from the field and 18.9% from beyond the arc. They lost the rebound battle but were able to force 32 turnovers from the visitors, the seventh time this season they've forced a total of 30 or more. They have yet to force fewer than 25 turnovers so far this season.
Offensively, the Blazers were led by
Mariah Collins who scored 16 points, the 9th time she's had double digit scoring this season.
Ashlyn Horne scored 10 points, a season high.
Belhaven will look to bounce back Saturday, January 11th, when they host Concordia University at Rugg Arena. Tip off in the conference matchup is set for 1 PM.
