ALPINE, Texas - The Belhaven Blazers men's basketball team competed on the road against the Sul Ross State University Lobos on Saturday, January 4, and the Lobos came away with an 87-73 victory on the hardwood.
The Blazers and Lobos both started out strong traded baskets for the first couple of minutes; however, the Lobos took the lead and extended it to 22-11 with just under ten minutes remaining in the first half. The Lobos held on to their lead pushing it to 37-23 at halftime.
The Blazers battled back to start the second half cutting the lead to 48-42 with about 15 minutes remaining in the game as part of their 50 point second half; however, the Lobos surged ahead late in the second half to match the Blazers with a 50 point half of their own and earn the 87-73 victory.

Brosnan Cooks led the scoring for the Blazers with 19 points paired with nine rebounds, which also led the Blazers. Junior guard
Josh Roberts had 14 points, freshman guard
Matthew McMillan had 12 points, while senior guard
Trai James and freshman guard
Luke Couch had 11 points each. Senior guard
Justin Jones had four points, while junior forward
Brandon Phillips and senior guard
Rick Hodum had two points each to round out the scoring for the Blazers.
As a team, the Blazers were 23-for-66 for a percentage of 34.8, including 7-for-32 for a percentage of 21.9 from the three point area, and went 20-for-25 for a percentage of 80.0 from the charity stripe. The Blazers scored 30 points in the paint, had 16 points off turnovers, ten second chance points, 12 fast break points, and 25 points from their bench.
The Blazers fall to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in American Southwest Conference play and return to action on January 9, as they host the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Cru. The action is set for a 7L30 p.m., tip inside Rugg Arena.
