Blazers Fall to Millsaps in the Riverside Rumble

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University football team fell to the Millsaps College Majors, by a final score of 28-14 in the 2019 edition of the Riverside Rumble on Thursday evening.

The scoring got started in the second quarter when the Majors scored on a 31-yard touchdown pass to Austin Russell with under a minute to play in the half. Belhaven received the kick to open the second half and Senior Joey Walden broke a big return taking the ball back across midfield. Despite the good field position, an untimely fumble on a hand off attempt saw the Blazers lose possession near midfield. Millsaps capitalized on the turnover and good field position to drive down the field and score again on a 6-yard touchdown pass to Brian McGowan with just over 11 minutes remaining in the 3rd Quarter.

Belhaven was able to get a good return on the ensuing kickoff thanks to a 43-yard return from Kolbe Blunt. The Blazers started the drive on their own 48-yard line but on 3rd down, Austin Fletcher was stopped inches short of the line to gain. The Blazers looked to be going for it on 4th and inches but a false start knocked them back five yards and forced Belhaven to punt. Millsaps was able to put together a 12-play, 82-yard drive scoring on a 10-yard touchdown pass with 3:15 left in the 3rd Quarter and extended their lead to 21-0. With less than a minute to play in the 3rd, Millsaps added to their lead after Tareze Grant intercepted a pass by Hunter McEachern over the middle and returned it 68 yards for the score.

The Blazers were able to get on the scoreboard in the 4th Quarter when Hunter McEachern found Brad Foley for a 10-yard touchdown capping off an 11-play, 65-yard drive. McEachern and Foley linked up again later in the 4th Quarter for a 23-yard catch and run that set Belhaven up on the Majors' 1-yard line. Foley was able to punch it in from a yard out and make it a 28-14 Millsaps lead with 3:12 remaining in the game.

Offensively, Belhaven was led by Hunter McEachern who went 17 of 35 for 166 yards with a touchdown and interception. Brad Foley led the receiving attack with 73 yards and a score. On the ground, McEachern led the team with 39 yards and Foley had 20 yards of his own to go along with his rushing touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball, Bo Robertson and Justin Percy led the way with 7 tackles each. Six Blazers recorded a tackle for loss in the contest. Belhaven was able to force a turnover late on a fumbled rushing attempt.

The Blazers will be back in action on Saturday, September 14th when they host the Wildcats of Louisiana College at the Belhaven Bowl Stadium. Kickoff between the Blazers and Wildcats is set for 7:00 p.m.
