COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Belhaven University volleyball team defeated the Mississippi University for Women Owls 3-2 in five sets on Tuesday evening in non-conference play. With the win, the Blazers improve to 6-7 overall.
The first set went back and forth for the majority of the set, but the Blazers closed out the first set earning 5 of the last 7 points to make the final set score 25-20. The Green and Gold carried the momentum into the second set by taking the quick 9-3 advantage. MUW eventually would take the lead in the second set, but the Blazers regained the lead and took the set by a final of 25-22.
The Owls knew the third set was a must win set. Both teams exchanged the lead in the set until the score halted at 20-20. MUW would go on to take the next five points to claim the third set 25-20, but the Blazers still held on to the 2-1 lead.The fourth set was similar to the third set as the Owls earned the 25-20 victory in the fourth set to force a fifth set. MUW had an 8-5 midway through the final set, but the Green and Gold rallied back to take the next seven points to make the score 12-8. The Blazers went on to hold off the Owls and claim the 15-11 fifth set and take the 3-2 victory over MUW.
Callista Moore led the Blazers with 12 kills and 11 digs, while
Izabella Erickson tallied nine kills an d
Chelsea Creighton posted seven kills and five blocks.
Evelyn Parker also had five blocks in the contest and
Vivien Marquez earned two blocks to go along with an ace.
Grace Laukhuf had 23 assists in the match, while
Vicky Vo posted 15 digs in the win.
The Blazers will return the court on Friday, September 27 against Howard Payne in the first match for Belhaven in the ASC Crossover. East Texas Baptist University will be hosting the Crossover in Marshall, Texas. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
