BELTON, Texas - The Blazers traveled to Belton, Texas on Saturday to take on top ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belhaven's first road ASC game of the season. The Blazers would fall 23-13 with an extra point and a trio of field goals the difference for the Crusaders.
Belhaven got off to a rocky start taking on the top team in the country after UMHB scored quickly on a 2-yard touchdown run from Jo'Vel McDaniel less than three minutes into the game. The Cru would add another score four minutes later as quarterback Luke Poorman would hit Jonel Reed for a 14-yard touchdown.
The Blazers would answer back though with just over three minutes remaining in the first quarter as
Kolbe Blunt was able to punch it in from a yard out. UMHB would block the extra point attempt and add a 44-yard field goal a few minutes later to lead 17-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Mary Hardin-Baylor would extend their lead in the second quarter with Anthony Avila hitting a pair of field goals the latter of which went through as time expired and gave UMHB a 23-6 lead heading into halftime.
The Blazers would hit back in the second half when
Hunter McEachern found tight end
Tyrus Black for a 22-yard touchdown pass with 13 minutes remaining in the game.
Cade Ganey would knock in the extra point but that would be the final score of the game with Belhaven falling 23-13.
On offense, the Blazers were led by
Hunter McEachern who went 16-29 for 270 yards and a touchdown.
Louis James led all Belhaven receivers with five receptions for 114 yards.
Tyrus Black followed with four catches for 87 yards, one of which was the 22-yard touchdown. On the ground,
Brad Foley had 13 carries for 32 yards and
Kolbe Blunt had the lone rushing touchdown for the Green and Gold.
On the defensive side of the ball,
David Lewis led the Blazers with nine total tackles, four of which were solo tackles. Corey Tolliver had six tackles on the night including one tackle for loss.
Chris Cobb led Belhaven with a pair of tackles for loss and a sack.
Isaiah Blackmon also had a sack. The Blazers forced four fumbles in the contest with
TJ Hersey forcing a pair.
Belhaven will next be in action Saturday, September 28th at 1 PM when they host McMurry University at Belhaven Bowl Stadium.
