THE RUNDOWN
JACKSON, Miss – The Belhaven University baseball team fell short to the University of Texas at Tyler on Saturday morning following a late push to make a comeback, falling to the Patriots by a final score of 12-6 on the celebration day of the legendary Blazers coach, Hill Denson.
The Patriots got out to a one run lead in the first inning and followed with two runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead over Belhaven. In the bottom half of the third inning, Justin Milam double to centerfield, scoring Evan Moore to cut the Patriot lead to 3-1.
UT Tyler stretched their lead to 8-1 over the course of the next three innings, before a second double by Justin Milam and a hit by pitch to Nick Lucido allowed two runs to cross the plate to help bring Belhaven within an 8-3 score.
The defending National Champions yet again answered with four runs in the top of the eight inning to distance themselves from the Blazers 12-3. Yet Belhaven tried to make a last minute push with three runs in the final inning by way of a balk, an error, and a wild pitch. Unfortunately, Belhaven fell by a final score of 12-6 to the Patriots.
With two weeks remaining in the season, the University and Athletic Department at Belhaven honored Head Coach Hill Denson for his tenure and service to the program at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Saturday after the game.
