THE RUNDOWN
After torrential down pours that totaled an hour and forty-seven minutes worth of weather delays, the Blazers preserved a 5-4 win over the Centenary College Gents in game one of a double-header on Saturday afternoon, before falling by a final of 9-6 in game two.
The Blazers trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first inning but with timely hitting and exceptional base running, quickly pushed across two runs to take a 2-1 lead.Â
Centenary tied and eventually regained the lead in the third inning with a bunt and sacrifice fly that scored Peyton Corma, giving the Gents the 3-2 advantage. A wild pitch in the bottom half of third inning allowed Hunter White to score from third base, pushing across the tying run.
A single by Tucker Calhoun in the fourth and a double by Nick Lucido in the fifth helped score both Logan Walters and Trip Benson, as the Blazers went ahead 4-3.Â
Trip Benson gave Belhaven an insurance run in the fifth inning, scoring off of a double to left field from Nick Lucido. Belhaven led 5-3. Centenary added one run in the sixth, yet Belhaven held the Gents Scoreless in the seventh to complete the victory by a final of 5-4.
Game two of the double-header finished in with a different outcome for the Green and Gold, falling by a final score of 9-6.Â
Centenary scored four runs during a combined second and third inning, taking a 4-1 lead. In the bottom half of the third inning, Justin Milam smashed a towering solo home run over the left field fence, pulling the Blazers back within two runs, 4-2.Â
The Gents began to separate themselves on the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. They led 7-2 heading into the of the fourth, yet Belhaven scored three runs with the help of a single from Julyan Urena and a sacrifice fly from Justin Milam to bring the score back to 7-5 after four innings.Â
A two run fifth inning gave Centenary, once again, a four run lead, 9-5. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Trip Benson hit a solo home run to cut the lead back to 9-6. Belhaven was unable to complete the comeback in the final inning of the contest, falling to the Gents, 9-5, to split the series.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Belhaven finished with a total of thirteen hits in both games combined with five hits in game one and eight hits in game two.
- Justin Milam recorded another multiple hit game on Saturday in game two. He finished with four hits in three games this weekend including a solo home run Saturday.
- Trip Benson recorded his first home run of the season in the seventh inning of Saturdays game two matchup against Centenary.
