Belhaven Comes Up Just Short Against #18 Oglethorpe

Box Score ATLANTA, Ga. -  The Belhaven Women's Basketball team suffered just their second defeat of the season on Tuesday falling 81-76 on the road at #18 Oglethorpe University.

The Blazers fell behind early at Oglethorpe with the hosts jumping out to an early double digit lead. At the end of the first, Belhaven trailed by 10 but were able to sharpen up their defense in the second quarter limiting Oglethorpe to just 10 points. With a strong run in the second quarter, Belhaven took a 39-38 lead into half time.

Oglethorpe would bounce back in the third quarter to take a five point lead into the final frame. The Blazers would match the hosts' fourth quarter scoring pace but would come up just short, falling to an 81-76 final.

As a team, Belhaven struggled to get a rhythm on offense shooting just 28.2% on the day. From behind the arc, the Blazers shot 25.7% which led Oglethorpe's three-point percentage. Belhaven scored 25 points off turnovers but were out-rebounded 61-43 in the contest.

Keke Lyles led the Blazers in scoring with 22 points and five assists while going 11-14 from the free throw line. Peyton Papenburg finished with 15 points and three rebounds. Both Lyles and Papenburg recorded their 9th straight double digit scoring game to open the season. Mariah Collins continued her balanced work finishing with 10 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

After the loss, Belhaven falls to 7-2 on the season. They'll look to bounce back after the start of the new year taking on Howard Payne on January 2nd which will mark the start of ASC play. Tip off in Brownwood, Texas is set for 5:30 PM.
