Box Score ATLANTA, Ga. – The Belhaven University women's basketball team defeated Centre College 78-67 Monday afternoon in non-conference play. With the win, Belhaven improved to 7-1 overall.
The Blazers opened the game going on a 19-7 run at the 4:47 mark of the first quarter. The Colonels stormed back to cut the lead to 22-19 at the end the first quarter. Centre and Belhaven went back and forth for the majority of the second quarter, but the Blazers held on to make the score 40-33 heading into halftime.
The Green and Gold lost the lead midway through the third quarter, however the Blazers did not back down and took the advantage away from the Colonels to bring the score to 46-46 midway through the third quarter. Belhaven did not fall behind for the rest of the third quarter to make the score 57-51 going into the final frame. The Blazers continued to shoot well in the fourth quarter as the Green and Gold secured the 78-67 victory over the Centre College Colonels in the first game of the TownePlsce Suites by Marriott Classic.
Peyton Papenburg led the Blazers with 34 points and 10 rebounds. Additionally, she shot 50 percent from behind the arc and was 8-for-10 from the charity stripe.
Keke Lyles finished the afternoon with 19 points, while
Sydney Martin posted 10 points and five rebounds. As a team, the Blazers shot 41.2 percent from three point range and 72 percent from the free throw line.
The Blazers will return to action on December 17
th against Oglethorpe University for the second game of the TownePlace Suites by Marriott Classic in Atlanta, Ga. on the campus of Oglethorpe University. Tip- off is set for 3:00 p.m.
