Wildcats Claim Game One, Blazers Rebound To Dominate Game Two

PINEVILLE, La. - The Belhaven University baseball team split the first two games of the series against the Louisiana College Wildcats on Friday afternoon in American Southwest Conference play.

The Blazers fell in game one on Friday by a final score of 2-0 then bounced back in game two, winning 7-0 in a dominating performance all around.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Game one

- The Wildcats struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning as Duncan Cornfoot broke a scoreless ballgame with a single to right field, scoring a runner from second base to give LC a 1-0 lead.

- In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Wildcats doubled off the wall to score a runner from third base, this time extending the lead to 2-0.

- In a low offensive game for both teams, the Wildcats defeated the Blazers 2-0 in game one of the doubleheader.

- Game two

- Antoine Watts flew out to centerfield, scoring Trip Benson from third base to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead after one inning.

- Belhaven then added one more run in the second inning, pushing its lead to 2-0 after Colton Fontana singled to short, scoring Tucker Calhoun. With the combination of a throwing error and aggressive base running, Belhaven crossed two more runs in the second on the LC missed throw.

- Leading 4-0, Antoine Watts added his second RBI of the game, hitting a single to center, scoring Kreg Garner. After scoring four runs in the second inning, the Blazers led 5-0.

- Will Costinett added some insurance runs to the Blazers lead in the fourth inning with a towering two run home run to left field, his seventh of the season, to give Belhaven a 7-0 lead.

- Lights out pitching and a great game offensively helped lift the Blazers to a 7-0 victory to even the series at 1-1.

KEY STATISTICS

- Game one

- Drew Bellipanni had the only hits for the green and gold in game one, finishing 2-for-3 with one double.

- Starting pitcher Hunter Sanford went 5.0 innings pitched, giving up three hits, two runs, and striking out six Wildcat hitters.

- Kreg Garner and Trip Benson each had a double in the contest. 

- Game two

- With just two hits in game one, Belhaven bounced back in game two offensively with thirteen hits collectively. Eight different Blazers had a hit.

- Six different Blazers scored runs in the contest with Trip Benson leading the team with two runs scored. Benson finished 2-for-5 at the plate.

- Antoine Watts and Will Costinett each had two RBI's. Costinett hit his seventh home run of the season, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. He went 3-for-3 with a home run (7) a double, and a single.

- Tucker Calhoun had a multi hit ball game, collecting three hits in four plate appearances. He had one double and a run scored.

- Starting pitcher David Hall (3-4) picked up the win and went 7.0 innings pitched, allowing six hits, no runs, and striking out six opposing hitters.

- The Blazers pitching staff struck out eight batters combined.

UP NEXT

Belhaven and Louisiana College will meet for game three of the series tomorrow with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. Tyler Wolfe is the anticipated starter for the Blazers.
