Blazers Sweep Austin College 17-3 and 12-11

JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven University softball team swept the Austin College Roos in a two game series Tuesday night with wins of 17-3 and 12-11 to improve to 8-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Game one

- The bottom of the first inning proved to be a dagger to Austin College as the Blazers crossed a total of ten runs in the inning to take a quick 10-0 lead.

- Makayla Reed was a major factor in the ten run inning as Reed singled and doubled in her two at bats of the inning and drove in two runs.

- Austin College took back three of the runs scored against them, scoring three runs in the top half of the second inning to close the lead to 10-3.

- The Blazers bats continued to stay of fire in the second inning, as the green and gold added four more runs to increase the lead to 14-3 after just two innings of play.

- Danielle Darmohray hit a two run home run in the bottom of the fourth giving Belhaven a 17-3 lead. The lead was too much to overcome for Austin College as the Blazers won by a final of 17-3 in five innings.

- Game two

- Cassidy Comstock helped the Blazers get off to great first inning, driving in two runs on the way to a four run first inning.

- Belhaven added one more in the second inning to take the lead 5-0 after a single and an RBI by Makayla Reed.

- Austin College tied things up at 5-5 with the help of an error, an RBI single, and a bases clearing triple. 

- A three run fifth inning extended the Roos lead to 8-5. Meg Garton helped the Blazers answer the call in the bottom of the fifth inning, trimming the Roos lead to 8-6 after a single that drove in Brianna Dollar.

- Two more runs crossed the for Austin College to give AC a 10-6 advantage over the Blazers.

- Down to their final six outs, Belhaven put together an impressive sixth inning, led by a solo home run from the bat of Marlee Blackwell. Belhaven scored six runs in the sixth inning to regain the lead 12-10.

- The Roos had bases loaded at one point in the top of the seventh inning, but were only able to cross one run over the plate as the Roos fell to the Blazers by a final score of 12-11.

KEY STATISTICS

- Game one

- Kaitlyn Blubaugh, Makayla Reed, Danielle Darmohray, and Marissa Rice each collected two hits in the contest.

- Kaitlyn Blubaugh scored three runs, walked two times, and drove in an RBI.

- Makayla Reed finished with two runs scored and two runs batted in.

- Danielle Darmohray was a force at the plate, posting three runs, three runs batted in, and a home run in game one. 

- The Blazers scored ten runs in the first inning and collected fourteen hits as a team.

- Lauren Feagin (1-0) earned the start for the green and gold in the circle. She went 3.0 innings pitched, giving up two hits, no runs, one walk, two strikeouts, while earning the win.

- Game two

- Four Blazers collected two hits in the matchup (Meg Garton, Makayla Reed, Whitney Jemison, Cassidy Comstock).

- Kaitlyn Blubaugh, Marlee Blackwell, and Whitney Jemison each tallied two runs scored, respectively. Brianna Dollar led the team with three runs scored. 

- Makayla Reed, Cassidy Comstock, and Danielle Darmohray finished tied for a team high two RBI's in the contest.

- Marlee Blackwell hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning that began a momentum swing in the Blazers comeback win. 

- Senior Jordan Herring earned the start in the circle for game two, striking out a team high eight batters in five innings pitched.

- Jordan Self (4-0) entered the game in the sixth inning in relief, earning the win to improve to 4-0 on the year. 

- The Blazers finished with fourteen hits for the second consecutive game in a row.

UP NEXT

Belhaven will take on Hardin-Simmons University in a three game conference series this weekend in Abilene, Texas. Game one will be played Friday with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m.
